[7:16]  1 tn Heb “Those that went in, male and female from all flesh they went in.”

[12:16]  2 sn He did treat Abram well. The construction of the parenthetical disjunctive clause, beginning with the conjunction on the prepositional phrase, draws attention to the irony of the story. Abram wanted Sarai to lie “so that it would go well” with him. Though he lost Sarai to Pharaoh, it did go well for him – he received a lavish bride price. See also G. W. Coats, “Despoiling the Egyptians,” VT 18 (1968): 450-57.

[12:16]  3 tn Heb “and there was to him.”

[26:20]  4 tn The Hebrew verb translated “quarreled” describes a conflict that often has legal ramifications.

[26:20]  5 tn Heb “and he”; the referent (Isaac) has been specified in the translation for clarity.

[26:20]  6 tn Heb “and he called the name of the well.”

[26:20]  7 sn The name Esek means “argument” in Hebrew. The following causal clause explains that Isaac gave the well this name as a reminder of the conflict its discovery had created. In the Hebrew text there is a wordplay, for the name is derived from the verb translated “argued.”

[26:20]  8 tn The words “about it” are supplied in the translation for stylistic reasons.

[28:4]  9 tn Heb “and may he give to you the blessing of Abraham, to you and to your offspring with you.” The name “Abraham” is an objective genitive here; this refers to the blessing that God gave to Abraham.

[28:4]  10 tn The words “the land” have been supplied in the translation for clarity.

[28:4]  11 tn Heb “the land of your sojournings,” that is, the land where Jacob had been living as a resident alien, as his future descendants would after him.

[35:22]  12 tn Heb “and Reuben went and lay with.” The expression “lay with” is a euphemism for having sexual intercourse.

[35:22]  sn Reuben’s act of having sexual relations with Bilhah probably had other purposes than merely satisfying his sexual desire. By having sex with Bilhah, Reuben (Leah’s oldest son) would have prevented Bilhah from succeeding Rachel as the favorite wife, and by sleeping with his father’s concubine he would also be attempting to take over leadership of the clan – something Absalom foolishly attempted later on in Israel’s history (2 Sam 16:21-22).

[42:19]  13 tn Heb “bound in the house of your prison.”

[42:19]  14 tn The disjunctive clause is circumstantial-temporal.

[42:19]  15 tn Heb “[for] the hunger of your households.”

[50:20]  16 tn Heb “you devised against me evil.”

[50:20]  17 tn Heb “God devised it for good in order to do, like this day, to preserve alive a great nation.”
